Celebrating Textiles Day - From an Unintended Idea to a Bestseller

India’s textile industry is one of the oldest industries in the Indian economy, dating back a millennia. Renowned for its diversity, scale, and craftsmanship, Indian textiles are known for their exquisite and intricate weaving patterns, as well as detailed printing and designing. India’s sewing minds are the superheroes who with every design, print and fabric create happiness for everyone and every home. National Textile Day which is celebrated every year on 3rd May is a celebration of creativity and craftsmanship. This day honours the artists and their skills that go into the making of a masterpiece. With every knit, stitch and weave, artisans literally give life to every textile design that makes your space a home - ‘ghar’

Incepted in 2011, House This is a new-generation home & lifestyle brand offering thoughtful & coordinated home decor solutions. House This celebrates & designs unexplored stories that are found in Indian culture, habitats and communities. We believe in the power of stories and fables and see it as a reflection of people’s personalities. House This takes pride in designing thoughtful, aesthetic and functional home decor solutions that are exclusively inspired, designed and made in India. From India’s beaches to commonly available indigenous fruits, House This takes inspiration from the timeless India that we grew up in and the India that’s growing now with confidence.

We always feel ecstatic about discovering something new, something beautiful when we think about launching a new collection. The products we create that sit around your home are little tale tellers that will add to your refreshing mornings, warm afternoons, cheerful evenings, and relaxing nights.

When our customers buy a House This product, they take home not just a cushion or a bedsheet, but a small, unnoticed part of this beautiful country we live in.Today on this National Textile Day, let’s walk you through the designing & production process at House This.

What Goes Behind the Scenes

A tough grind of art & creativity! Before any House This product reaches your doorstep it goes through a rigorous yet interesting process. With a clear idea & approach in mind, our textile designing team starts the initial research and analysis process. “We majorly travel to different locations from where our collections are derived as it helps us to connect with the place at a physical and emotional level” says Mrinal, lead textile designer at House This. Travel plays a major role in inspiration hunting that helps the design team capture the design in its most authentic manner.

Once the research & inspiration is done, our design team starts with the lookboarding and colorboarding process. In simple terms, lookboarding & colorboarding means a visual summary of the collection. Once this is done, the design team starts with the motif & elements sketching process which is the most creative and complex part of the design process. Based on the design story and colour palette, fabric and trims are decided. Now comes the most exciting part - Sampling. After sampling is done, it goes in the hands of our sewing masters and the real magic starts. With their expertise, they create wonders which further goes to packaging and then reaches your home to become a part of your everyday living!

A Look Back at Some of Our Bestsellers

We create collections, but it's our valuable customers who turn them into bestsellers. Today, let’s share an anecdote about the collections loved by House This customers.

Amra:

Our Amra collection is inspired by India’s favourite summer fruit - the mango. The idea for this collection came about in a surprising manner - at our lunch table. Yes! you read it right.

The idea stuck with our design team, when one of our team members brought Dashari Aam from her hometown in Uttar Pradesh. That Aam ka Dabba opened a big trail of nostalgia amongst the people sitting on the table. And, that was a cue for our design team that a commonly available Aam is not just a fruit but it's an emotion that renders many childhood memories and that’s how our Amra collection was designed!

Badamwari:

Our newly launched Badamwari collection is inspired by the beautiful city, Srinagar, which is famous for its Badamwari flower (also called almond blossom). The idea for this collection came from an Instagram post of one of our teammates who visited Srinagar last year in May and posted a picture of her with the Badamwari flower.

While everyone in the office was interested in the travel stories, Mrinal was keener on the flower with which her colleague had posed and to everyone’s surprise, we discovered a new and a lesser known gem - Badamwari flower.

Shilip Collection:

Our Shilip collection has been re-imagined and re-created by our master craftsmen to upcycle leftover weaves. This collection is a result of a real business challenge. We had unused rugs in huge quantities that were left after the production of the Kovalam Jute Rug. Using this unused material was as much a business decision as it was a step towards sustainability and hence our team came up with the idea of Shilip.

Wrapping Up:

We hope you enjoyed reading these untold stories as much as our team enjoyed creating these collections. On this National Textiles Day, we feel so overwhelmed to be a part of India’s growing and leading textile industry. We are here to co-create this space with you. Because nothing is possible without you- the customer in it. You are at the heart of all we do!

Keep reading till we come up with our next untold story, one story at a time.
